HIDOE FAQs: Hawai'i Teacher Salary Questions

How do Upward courses apply toward HIDOE reclassification?

Hawaiʻi public school educators need to accumulate 15 qualifying credits to successfully advance to the next class on the HIDOE salary schedule. Our fully online professional development courses are designed to provide the rigorous academic credits accepted by the Department of Education’s Teacher Reclassification Unit.

When you complete a course, your graduate-level credits are transcripted through UMass Global, our accredited university partner, and can be submitted alongside your standard OTM 200-005 form to trigger your next permanent salary tier jump.

When should I complete my courses to hit the HIDOE reclassification deadlines?

While Upward gives you a generous window of 1 to 6 months to complete your coursework, the HIDOE Teacher Reclassification Unit formally processes salary step upgrades twice a year.

Your university transcripts must reflect course completion dates before the start of the HIDOE semester in which you hope to reclassify.

Is Upward on Learnsoft (formerly PDE3)?

No. Because you are earning fully accredited, graduate-level academic semester hours through our university partner (UMass Global), your credits are tracked on an official university transcript.

You simply email your official transcript and form OTM 200-005 to teacher.reclassification@k12.hi.us .

Can I use Upward to get to Class VIII?

Yes! Whether you are a newer educator looking to cross your very first salary class landmark or a senior teacher pushing your placement from Class VII to Class VIII, our university credits are an accepted mechanism for pay tier advancement across the Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) bargaining unit framework.
