How Upward Works

Practical, self-paced professional development designed for real teachers.

We know your time is valuable. That is why we designed our courses to cut out administrative busywork and focus entirely on high-impact strategies you can actually use in your classroom. No mandatory login times, no group projects, and absolutely no massive portfolios.

Here is exactly how our process works from enrollment to earning your professional credits:

1. Find Your State

Because professional development rules vary by state and district, the process always begins by confirming your local requirements. Visit our state directory to select your region. This ensures you view the exact course catalogs, pricing, and credit tracks approved for your specific area:

  • The Graduate Credit Track ($240 flat rate): For teachers nationwide seeking horizontal salary lane advancement or general state license renewal. These courses are credentialed directly through the University of Massachusetts Global and yield 3 graduate-level professional development semester hours (9000-series). The $240 price is fully inclusive of all course materials and university credit registration.
  • The State-Specific Registry Track: For educators fulfilling requirements under targeted state frameworks, such as Texas CPE hours, Pennsylvania Act 48 hours, New York ASPDP credits and CTLE hours, etc. These courses feature state-specific pricing and are processed directly through their respective state reporting systems.

Upward Rewards Note: Planning to take multiple courses? You can earn cash to spend at hundreds of retailers by taking advantage of our Upward Rewards Program.

2. Learn At Your Own Pace (100% Asynchronous)

The moment you register, you receive immediate access to your digital course materials. Because our format is entirely asynchronous, you are in complete control of your environment and schedule. There are no weekly deadlines or mandatory sign-in windows; you have a generous timeframe of 1 to 6 months from purchase to complete your work (not sooner or later).

3. Complete Actionable Coursework

We don't believe in hundreds of pages of theoretical busywork. Our assignments are designed to be highly practical and immediately applicable to your real-world classroom. You will complete targeted reflections, resource design, and strategy implementations—never overwhelming, administrative portfolios.

4. Review, Processing & Credit Issuance

Once you finish your assignments, simply email your completed coursework directly to our team at support@upwardteachers.com

  • Fast Evaluation: We review and grade your work within one week of submission.
  • Official Transcripts (Graduate Track): Once graded, we submit your record to UMass Global. Within 5 business days, your grades are finalized, allowing you to instantly order your official, registrar-issued transcript bearing the university seal.
  • Direct Reporting (State Registry Track): For specific state tracks, your successfully completed hours are processed per the Earning Credit section detailed on your state page.

Frequently asked questions

Are there any specific technical requirements or software needed to take a course?

No advanced software or specialized platforms are required. Our courses are fully accessible on any standard web browser using a desktop computer, laptop, or tablet. Course materials are delivered digitally, and you will complete your assignments using standard word processing software (such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs). When you are finished, you simply email your completed work directly to our team.

Can I complete a course faster than the 6-month window?

Yes, but to maintain academic integrity and comply with state department of education contact-hour equivalencies, courses cannot be completed in less than 1 month from your date of registration.

You have full control over your daily schedule within that 1-to-6-month window to fit the coursework around your professional and personal life.

How does the Upward Rewards Program work?

Through the program, you can earn gift cards for completing multiple courses and successfully referring other teachers to Upward. For the complete instructions on how to start earning, please visit our dedicated Upward Rewards Program page.

Can I take more than one course at a time?

Yes. Many educators choose to enroll in multiple courses simultaneously to maximize their time—especially during summer or extended school breaks.

Because our courses are designed to comply with rigorous academic contact-hour guidelines, remember that the 1-to-6-month completion window applies to each course individually.

Are Upward courses evaluated with a letter grade?

It depends on the track you choose. Our Graduate Credit courses are formally evaluated on a traditional letter-grade scale (A–F) to ensure maximum compliance with district human resource policies, as many school systems do not accept "Pass/Fail" or "Satisfactory" marks for salary lane advancement.

Other courses are processed and tracked directly in line with your state's registry reporting standards. Visit your State page for more information.

What kind of feedback will I receive on my coursework?

We view professional development as a collaborative process, not a checklist. When you submit your assignments to our evaluation team, you won’t just get a automated pass/fail notification.

A member of our instructional team reviews your work and provides actionable, personalized feedback on your reflections and strategy implementations within one week, helping you bridge the course material directly into your daily teaching practice.
