Frequently asked questions

What are the NJDOE professional development requirements for teachers?

New Jersey teachers holding a Standard Certificate must complete at least 20 clock hours of professional development (PD) each school year.

These hours should be documented through your Individual Professional Development Plan (PDP), which is developed annually in consultation with your school supervisor.

Do your graduate-level courses count toward my 20-hour annual requirement?

Yes. In New Jersey, 1 graduate-level semester credit is equivalent to 15 PD hours.

Because New Jersey requires 20 PD hours annually, a 3-credit course (which equates to 45 PD hours) provides more than the minimum requirement for a single year.

Many districts allow educators to use the "excess" hours from a major professional learning activity to satisfy goals across multiple years of a multi-year PDP, provided it aligns with your supervisor's approval. We recommend discussing this strategy with your supervisor during your annual PDP meeting to see if your district allows you to apply a 45-hour course toward your long-term professional learning goals.

Will these credits be accepted for my district’s salary lane advancement?

Most New Jersey districts offer salary lane increases (e.g., BA+15, MA+30) for graduate-level credits.

Because our courses are provided through our regionally accredited university partner, they are widely accepted for salary advancement. We always recommend confirming with your district's HR or Professional Development department prior to enrollment to ensure your specific plan qualifies.

Does my New Jersey teaching certificate expire?

No. New Jersey’s Standard Teaching Certificate is permanent and does not expire. However, you must continue to complete your 20 hours of annual professional development as required by the state to maintain your active status.
